One of the most common arguments in discussions about poorly understood phenomena is that if no physical or publicly available evidence exists, then the phenomenon must be considered false. However, this conclusion is not always logical, nor is it supported by history.
Throughout history, there have been individuals who faced social, professional, and even legal consequences for defending ideas that challenged the prevailing consensus. There have also been whistleblowers, researchers, and journalists who have claimed to face pressure when attempting to disclose sensitive information. These historical examples demonstrate that, under certain circumstances, not all available information reaches the public immediately.
This does not mean that every claim lacking evidence should automatically be accepted as true. However, neither does it mean that the absence of public evidence is, by itself, proof that an event or phenomenon never occurred.
Science requires evidence because its purpose is to ensure that claims can be independently verified. This principle is fundamental to the development of reliable knowledge. At the same time, there are situations in which information may remain unavailable due to national security, confidentiality, or the protection of the individuals involved. In such cases, the absence of publicly accessible evidence does not necessarily constitute evidence of nonexistence.
Under these circumstances, the most reasonable position is to acknowledge the limits of our current knowledge. It is possible that relevant information exists but has not yet become public, just as it is possible that a particular claim is ultimately incorrect. The lack of available evidence does not allow either conclusion to be established with certainty.
History provides numerous examples of information that remained classified for years—or even decades—before eventually being released. These cases remind us that human knowledge is not always immediately accessible and that some truths can only be evaluated when new evidence becomes available.
For this reason, it is important to avoid two opposing extremes. The first is to declare that something is false simply because no public evidence currently exists. The second is to declare that something is true solely because it is claimed that the evidence has been concealed.
Between these two extremes lies a more balanced approach: one that combines critical thinking with intellectual openness. This means recognizing that the absence of physical or publicly available evidence does not automatically prove that a phenomenon is false, while also acknowledging that it does not, by itself, prove that the phenomenon is true. It means accepting uncertainty, carefully evaluating the available information, and remaining willing to revise our conclusions whenever new, verifiable evidence emerges.
Ultimately, the absence of physical evidence should not be confused with evidence of absence. In many cases, it simply indicates that we do not yet possess enough information to reach a definitive conclusion. The honest pursuit of truth requires both skepticism and open-mindedness, avoiding the mistake of turning uncertainty into certainty—whether to deny a possibility or to affirm it.
